The Australian mental health marketing discipline.
Mental health marketing has the highest creative-sensitivity bar in healthcare. Trauma-informed creative, crisis-resource visibility, AHPRA-aligned advertising, telehealth-ready booking flows, GP-referrer programmes for Mental Health Treatment Plans. The discipline most agencies don't have.
Six mental-health-specific disciplines
1. Trauma-informed creative
No before/after content. No stigmatising imagery. No urgency tropes. No B2C-style "barrier and solution" framing. Calm, professional, hopeful but not promissory, accessible language. Mental-health patients are typically experiencing acute distress; creative tone has to respect that.
2. Crisis-resource visibility
Lifeline (13 11 14), Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636), 13YARN (13 92 76), Kids Helpline, Suicide Call Back Service. Crisis-resource visibility on every mental-health website we build. Not a nice-to-have, a foundational design constraint. The agencies that don't build this in haven't thought about the audience.
3. AHPRA-aligned advertising
Mental health practitioners are AHPRA-regulated (psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors with regulated registration). Patient testimonials about clinical aspects of regulated services aren't permitted. Treatment-modality claims (CBT, EMDR, ACT) have to align with practitioner training + scope.
4. GP-referrer programme for Mental Health Treatment Plans
Medicare-funded mental health treatment requires a GP-prepared Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP). GPs are the gateway. CPD-style content for referring GPs, MHTP-awareness content, intake-form alignment between MHTP referrer + practitioner. Marketing programme has to integrate the GP-referrer side.
5. Telehealth-ready booking funnels
Telehealth psychology has changed the demand picture significantly through 2020-2026. Booking funnels optimised for first-session anxiety, fewer fields, clearer next steps, reassuring confirmation experience. Telehealth as integrated booking option, not a separate landing page.
6. Modality-specific intent SEO
Mental health patients search by modality (CBT, EMDR, ACT), by condition (anxiety, OCD, ADHD), by audience (children, adolescents, perinatal). Long-tail SEO that respects the specificity of patient search. Modality-matching content + clinician-modality mapping.
Why most agencies don't have this discipline
Three structural reasons:
- Mental health is a small share of most agencies' books, the discipline doesn't compound across enough engagements.
- Trauma-informed creative is a creative-direction discipline, it doesn't follow naturally from generic agency creative training.
- AHPRA's mental-health-advertising standard sits inside the broader AHPRA standard, agencies without an AHPRA pipeline at all don't have the mental-health-specific overlay.
