WA mining services marketing, a field guide.

By Adam Ducquet · 15 June 2026 · 3 min read

Field-guide for WA mining services contractors thinking about marketing in 2026. Drawn from running PYBAR Mining Services, JSW Australia (drilling, 23 months, zero ad spend, capability-led), SMW Drilling (Perth-pod-delivered), plus 18 other WA-based industrial clients.

The four operational levers

1. Capability statement design as procurement infrastructure

Tier-1 mining houses (BHP, Rio Tinto, FMG, Roy Hill, Newmont) screen on capability statements before they screen on price. Pages 1-4 doing all the work. Evidence-led, project-led, certification-led. Most WA mining services contractors have capability statements that get screened out at page 3 because page 3 is a generic "our values" spread instead of tier-1 reference projects. Berg Engineering's redesign won panel positions inside six months because pages 1-4 were rebuilt evidence-led.

2. LinkedIn senior-leader cadence

Procurement officers at tier-1 mining houses don't shop on Google for new vendors, they scroll LinkedIn looking at the senior-engineer cadence of brands they're already evaluating + brands that should be on their evaluation list. Personal-profile cadence for senior engineers, principals, and operations leadership is the operational currency. JSW Australia runs zero ad spend; the LinkedIn cadence (paired with AMEC + Mining Club presence) is what produces the inbound.

3. AMEC + Mining Club + AusIMM industry presence

The WA industrial calendar runs in person. AMEC Convention. AusIMM Open Cut Examiners. Mining Club Perth. Goldfields Mining Expo. Senior leadership presence at these events is the foundation that LinkedIn cadence builds on. The PYBAR + JSW pattern is to run earned-media + content production around these events as the operating cadence, not as ad-hoc one-offs.

4. FIFO recruitment marketing as paired programme

WA mining services labour market is structurally tight. FIFO drillers, offsiders, tradies, engineers. Recruitment marketing as a separate paid programme, SEEK + Indeed + LinkedIn Recruiter + Facebook Groups, runs alongside the procurement-pursuit programme. Same senior strategist, same operating discipline, separate ad accounts + KPIs. For mining services contractors, supply-side marketing is now arguably as important as demand-side.

What's structurally different about WA

  • Procurement teams are predominantly Perth-based. East-coast-only agencies can't sustain the operational tempo procurement-officer relationships require.
  • Industry calendar runs in person. AMEC, Mining Club, AusIMM events all WA-located or WA-anchored. Photography + video + senior-leader presence requires WA-resident support.
  • Tier-1 mining houses screen on safety credentials. ISO 45001, NSCA awards, ICAM training, near-miss reporting maturity. Safety-led capability-statement design is non-optional at tier-1.
  • FIFO labour market is geographically anchored to WA. Roster patterns, camp standards, swing-shift culture all WA-specific. Recruitment marketing run from east coast misses the cultural context.

For WA mining services firms evaluating agencies

Three practical evaluation questions:

  1. Can their senior strategist be at AMEC + Mining Club this year, in person?
  2. Can they show capability statements they've designed that won tier-1 panel positions inside 24 months?
  3. Do they run recruitment marketing as a paired programme, or treat it as a separate engagement?
