The Australian Pinterest opportunity.
Pinterest is structurally underused by Australian B2C brands. For specific categories, interiors retail, gift, lifestyle, beauty, food + beverage, Pinterest with Catalogue feed integration legitimately competes with Meta on cost-per-acquired-customer. Why we run Pinterest as a flagship channel for the right brands, and what makes it work.
Why Pinterest gets ignored
Most Australian B2C brands ignore Pinterest because the dominant agency narrative is "Meta + Google for B2C". Agencies running 2-4 ad variants per Meta campaign don't have spare bandwidth to run a separate Pinterest programme. The narrative gets reinforced.
For a specific subset of categories, the narrative is wrong.
Where Pinterest wins
Interiors retail
1825 Interiors runs Pinterest as a flagship channel alongside Meta. Pinterest's discovery-first, save-then-buy mechanic suits interiors purchase consideration cycles (longer than impulse-buy B2C, lots of saving + comparison + room-context visualisation before purchase). Cost-per-acquired-customer competes meaningfully with Meta for this category.
Gift + lifestyle
Pinterest's saver-audience targeting + seasonal-content cycles align with gift / lifestyle purchase patterns. Mother's Day, birthday, anniversary, holiday gifting, Pinterest users explicitly use the platform for gift research. Catalogue feed integration captures this intent.
Beauty + skincare
Beauty Pinterest is large and engaged. For brands with strong photography + product-detail content, Pinterest converts. The platform's image-led discovery suits beauty brand presentation in ways Meta's text-and-image format doesn't always.
Food + beverage
Recipe-led Pinterest is a major use case. F&B brands with recipe content, ingredient-spotlight content, occasion-specific content can attach to recipe-search saver behaviour. Niche but powerful for the right F&B brands.
Why most agencies skip it anyway
Three operational reasons:
- Pin-native creative is its own discipline. Pinterest creative requires vertical 2:3 ratio, high-quality lifestyle photography, text overlay design, board-context awareness. Agencies geared for Meta creative production have to add a Pinterest creative line to ship Pinterest properly.
- Catalogue feed integration takes time. Pinterest Catalogue + product-tag setup + Catalogue ad campaign architecture is a Pinterest-specific implementation. Skipping it leaves performance on the table.
- Attribution windows differ from Meta. Pinterest's attribution window is longer (saves convert 7-90 days later). Reporting respects the longer window rather than measuring against Meta-style 7-day click-through.
For brands evaluating Pinterest
Three practical questions:
- Are you in interiors / gift / lifestyle / beauty / F&B? If yes, Pinterest probably justifies a flagship channel slot.
- Do you have strong photography + lifestyle content? Pinterest creative requires it.
- Are you running Meta + Google + Klaviyo at retainer scale already? Pinterest as the second-channel addition usually outperforms TikTok for the categories above.
